Creating a group chat in the app desktop and web

Last updated on February 14, 2022
There may be times in which it is necessary to start a group chat with two or more people. As we discussed in Intro to Message in the app, groups and teams are similar in that they act as a conversation among a group of people. However, groups do not have the same permanence as a team and act more like a direct message among two or more people.

Creating a group chat

  1. Click on the New actions plus button in the top right-hand corner.
  2. Select Send new message from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the Members field, enter two or more names or email addresses separated by semicolons or commas.
  4. Configure the remaining settings and then click Send.
Another method for creating a group chat is to add a member to an existing direct messages:
  1. Navigate to Message via the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Select a direct message from your conversation list.
  3. In the right-hand conversation details pane, under Members, select the Add people person icon to open the New conversation window.
  4. In the Members field, enter a semicolon- or comma-separated list of names or email addresses of people you’d like to add to the group chat.
  5. Select Create.
You can also create a group chat by clicking the Send new message plus button next to Direct Messages on the left pane.

The group message will open in the app, and you will find that group message under the Direct Messages section in your conversation list. Group conversations are labeled with the names of each member in the group, listed in alphabetical order.

Note: The conversation history from the direct message will not migrate over to the group conversation when you convert that conversation. Likewise, when you add a person into an existing group, it will create a new group without the conversation history. To keep the conversation history of a group, you can convert it into a team conversation, then add the user into that team.
